Fertility Lifestyle Tip: One Thing in the Morning to Make the Very Most of Your Day

Fertility Lifestyle Tip: One Thing in the Morning to Make the Very Most of Your Day, image of a pink journal and pencil on a table

One of the hardest parts about the fertility journey is just how much time it can take— doctor’s appointments, lifestyle changes, second opinions, testing, and more testing.  As someone who has been on the patient side of the equation, I truly appreciate that there is only so much time in the day. It’s not like our workday gets shorter when going through infertility and the number of appointments can feel endless.

I wanted to share some tips for how I coped.

It started with One Thing in the Morning.  I actually do a 5 minute guided meditation called focus and it helps me think through what is the one thing I want to accomplish that day. This is outside of what is on your schedule. The risk in life is that we just slavishly follow to-do lists and endless tasks without thinking through what is our objective here. That is how time flies and we are still in a job we don’t like or not accomplishing greater goals, because changing the status quo takes effort to do what you need to do for you, not what you have to do to get through the day.

How to set you one thing

  1. Start your day with a meditation on what you want to get out of your day. I love Insight Timer (a free meditation app) with the 5-minute guided meditation “5 minutes to focus.” Close your eyes, breath deeply and listen to this five minute guided meditation. When you finish, write down the one thing you will do that day that moves you toward your bigger goal.

It seems so simple, but how often do we go weeks and not get around to taking care of ourselves—whether it is going to sign-up for the gym, decluttering our desk or mapping out our fertility plan.  What I most often see in my clients is a delay in getting started because it seems insurmountable—too much to do—work, doctor’s appointments, managing our relationships, and other family commitments. The thing is to have time, you need to make time.  To make time you need to know what you want. When that becomes crystal clear, then we have to examine what can be removed from our schedule. There is often “lost time” whether it is a one-sided relationship with a family member or friend that takes your time, but isnt’ there for you in return, or staying late at work when you don’t always have to do so.
